The Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan, H.E. Mr. Hiroshi Inomata, inaugurated two Mother and Child Health Centers in Villages Khan Kohi and Darwazgai of Nowshera, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa today. These centers were built with the grant assistance of worth US$ 113,903 provided by the Government of Japan to Basic Development Needs (BDN), a non-governmental organization actively working in the health sector. The inauguration ceremony was attended by members of BDN, representatives of health departments and community members of the vicinity. The construction of these two centers was made possible with the financial assistance provided from Embassy of Japan under its Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) Program. The said areas previously suffered from a lack of high quality maternal and child health services which caused numerous problems for its inhabitants. Now the two centers will contribute in providing the local community with an accessible facility for addressing the needs. At the inauguration ceremony, Ambassador Inomata stressed the importance of reliable and affordable medical facilities, and emphasized on the significance of maternal and child well-being for healthy growth of the children. For this reason, he mentioned, the Government of Japan has been placing priority in the health field. He further expressed his hope that this project would improve the general welfare of people in the area, and in doing so would undoubtedly strengthen the existing friendly relations between the people of Japan and Pakistan. (End) Note: The GGP Program is an initiative of the Japanese government with the belief that in consideration of the enormity of the challenges being faced by the world today, development assistance should not only be limited to governments, but also be channeled to the grassroots level through civil society organizations. Since its beginning in 1989 GGP has supported more than 340 projects in Pakistan, with a contribution of more than 2.4 billion Japanese Yen.
